There are six zones: Bastion, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, Revenredeth, the Maw and a new capital city called Oribos.Each one is unique and feels very different from other Warcraft zones.

Shadowlands makes a good first impression. Shortly after starting the expansion’s primary questline, you’re thrown into The Maw, a kind of uber-Hell where the worst of the worst go when they die. The problem is that it seems every soul has been sent to The Maw recently, which has allowed the realm’s ruler, a Thanos-like creature known as The Jailer, to build an army of the damned. With help from the recently crowned Lich Queen, Sylvanas Windrunner, The Jailer plans to use this army to take over all the realms of the Shadowlands and Azeroth as well.

For those who haven't kept up with the story of World of Warcraft (a tall task for anyone), Shadowlands represents the culmination of Sylvanas Windrunner's nefarious scheming. Having sundered the veil between the realms of the living and the dead, Azeroth faces perhaps its biggest challenge - more on that later - and, if nothing else, the chance to visit an entirely new landscape, complete with new races, political concerns, and world-building. Some, like the Kyrian, don't feel particularly innovative given how similar they are to the Vrykul, but others, like the Stewards, are a great addition to World of Warcraft. Similarly, some areas thrive more than others, as Bastion suffers from a particular blandness in its story-telling that feels surprising given how much more engaging areas like Ardenweald and Revendreth.

The zones are beautiful: Bastion and Ardenweald are particularly easy on the eyes.And each zone is home to a Covenant, which you’ll meet and learn about during the main quest line.Eventually you’ll choose to join one Covenant, which opens up a new Campaign at level 60 – and gives you access to unique abilities.

But let's not get carried away. Let's remember that one secret to WOW's success has always been its ability to modernise while staying true to itself, and never pretending to be anything other than the consummate old-school MMO.
