EA recently hinted at the possibility of adding NFT to FIFA 22, although the introduction of non-fungible tokens in the popular soccer franchise could get some attention. NFTs have recently gained traction, especially in the gaming industry, with properties like Axie Infinity bringing digital ownership to video games.

Earlier in the week, EA CEO Andrew Wilson spoke about NFTs and blockchain during the company's earnings call, dubbing them and 'play to earn' games "the future of our industry" as reported by PC Gamer.

NFTs and cryptocurrencies are currently a largely unregulated entity often exploited for scam purposes, and have been accused as having a huge negative impact on the environment due to the energy consumed during the electronic mining of currency. Steam has already banned blockchain games, but Ubisoft already has plans to create blockchain games with play-to-earn features. Reactions to NFT and crypto elements in games has been mixed; while the systems are popular in some areas of internet culture, a recent Dead by Daylight NFT experiment did not go down well with fans.

He noted that “I think that in the context of the games we create and the live services that we offer, collectible digital content is going to play a meaningful part in our future.” He followed that up by admitting it was “still early to tell” how things would change. However, he continued that “I think we’re in a really good position, and we should expect us to kind of think more innovatively and creatively about that on a go-forward basis.”

For EA this potentially means adding NFT to its popular soccer franchise but for now, it's unclear which fans made these claims regarding wanting FIFA 22NFT or what the time frame for EA's onboarding of the digital property looks like within. of the game.

How would it work?
As Wilson said, it is still very early stages and almost impossible to tell exactly how NFTs will be introduced to a game like FIFA 22.

Play to earn games often require an up-front payment in a cryptocurrency of some form or another, which could prove a stumbling block for the vastly popular games EA produces.

Those collections to which Wilson refers can easily include FIFA Ultimate Team, the game mode in which players collect cards from loot box-style systems. But it could easily be envisioned as working across games, such as NFTs for cosmetics in Apex Legends.

EA has not yet officially stepped into the NFT or blockchain space properly but the signs are there courtesy of recent job listings. Those listings have included the words “NFT” and “blockchain” suggesting that the firm plans on going into that side of games development.
